New Iberia woman charged with abandoning children

NEW IBERIA, La. ( KLFY ) – A New Iberia woman was arrested on charges of child desertion when she left two juveniles in her home while she was in Texas.

According to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office , deputies responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Oil Center Drive on July 6, regarding a juvenile in need of medical attention. Deputies discovered Acadian Ambulance paramedics treating a 4-year-old male juvenile left in the care of his 11-year-old cousin.

The mother of the 4-year-old and aunt of the 11-year-old left the children in her home while she traveled to Houston, Texas. Both children were transported to Iberia Medical Center where the 4-year-old was treated. DSFC was contacted and the children were released to family members.

The mother of the 4-year-old, Shandi Migues, 31, was arrested and booked into the Iberia Parish Jail. She was charged with cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion.

Bond has been set at $200,000.
