NEWARK, N.J. -- Minutes before the New Jersey Devils ' first practice session began on Tuesday, defenseman Luke Hughes skated onto the ice.

Wearing a black non-contact jersey, he was soon joined by the remaining defensemen on New Jersey's roster, including Brett Pesce .

Hughes participated in drills on one side of the ice before joining Adam Beckman, another injured player, on the other side, where they took shots at goaltenders Jake Allen and Jacob Markstrom .

After the team's second practice session, head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on Hughes and Pesce.

"The status remains the same," Keefe said. "They will continue to work. Different injuries, so they'll be able to do different things out there. But neither player is near a return at this point."

Hughes' initial timeline was six to eight weeks from Sept. 12.
