NEWTON — Three ordinances which provide funds for various Sussex County projects, including a new location for the Board of Elections , were unanimously approved Wednesday by county commissioners.

Two of the ordinances redirect unused funds from previous bond issues, one dating to 2018 and the other from 2021, into a new project which has the county buying the former Provident Bank building at 15 Trinity St., located across from the back of the county office complex on Spring Street.

The project would move the elections office from space in the Cochran Building on Spring Street to the branch office, which has a vault for holding voter and other vital information.

According to current plans, some of the space in the current BOE office would be converted into a workshop for maintenance of the county-owned voting machines which are stored in the basement of the Spring Street complex. Currently, technicians use a small space in that basement for work on the machines.

A third ordinance amendment by the commissioners extends uses of an $815,000 bond issue from 2022 for capital improvements at Sussex County Technical School to now include improvements to the school's sewer plant and utility lines at the school.

    Veterans parade scheduled

During commissioner comments, Commissioner Director Jill Space said this year's events honoring veterans, including a parade, will be held Nov. 3 at the Sussex County fairgrounds in Frankford.
