Gov. Phil Murphy announced Tuesday that Chief of Staff Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti will depart from her current role, transitioning to a senior advisor to the governor.

Current Principal Deputy Chief of Staff Tim

    Hillmann
will assume the chief of staff role later this summer, the governor also announced.

Gutierrez-Scaccetti has more than 40 years of public service experience, including stints as executive director at the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Last October , she succeeded George Helmy as chief of staff.

“Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti has done an outstanding job as my Chief of Staff over the past year,” said Murphy. “From negotiating a reauthorization of the Transportation Trust Fund to successfully enacting a Fiscal Year 2025 budget with our partners in the Legislature, Diane has brought a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise to our team.”

Murphy said he has asked her to continue serving in this new senior advisor role to help troubleshoot some of the most pressing and challenging operational challenges, such as large infrastructure projects and complex interdepartmental initiatives.

    A 'noble calling'

“I thank Diane for her service as Chief of Staff and look forward to her continuing to play a senior role on my team,” Murphy added.

In a press release put out by the governor’s office, Gutierrez-Scaccetti described public service as a "noble calling."

“Over the past 40 years, I’ve taken that maxim to heart by serving in a variety of transportation planning and management roles in government,” said Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “I’m grateful to the governor for the opportunity to lead his team both as Chief of Staff and Department of Transportation Commissioner and look forward to continuing to serve the people of New Jersey in a new capacity.”

Hillmann has served in his current role since October, following a stint as deputy chief of staff for government affairs and as the governor’s director of appointments since 2019.

“Tim has been a key member of my team since 2019 and has successfully overseen our legislative affairs, intergovernmental affairs, appointments, and constituent relations teams, among other departments,” said Murphy.
“I am excited to have him lead our team in the Governor’s Office and advance our mission of building a stronger, fairer, and more affordable New Jersey.”

Hillmann thanked the governor for the opportunity to continue serving in his administration and acknowledged the outgoing chief of staff.

I also would like to thank Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti for her leadership at the Department of Transportation and the Governor’s Office, where I have been fortunate to work under her and witness her extraordinary dedication to public service,” said
    Hillmann
. “I look forward to working with the rest of the administration to continue and strengthen the Murphy Administration’s record of enduring achievements over the next 18 months.”
