The Murphy administration announced the launch this week of Year Five of Charge Up New Jersey.

Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation establishing the state's electric vehicle (EV) incentive programs in 2020. Charge Up New Jersey offers incentives for the purchase of EVs and EV chargers.

The law calls for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to provide at least $30 million in annual incentives for the program for 10 years. The state's recently signed Fiscal Year 2025 budget included an additional $20 million for the program, making a total of $50 million available this year.

Charge Up New Jersey offers residents a chance to receive a $2,000 base incentive for all eligible vehicles up to a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $55,000. The stimulus is available directly at a car dealership or showroom at the point of sale. It also offers an In-Home EV Charger Incentive of $250 for the purchase and installation of a qualifying Level 2 charger.

This fall, the NJBPU is making available an additional income-based incentive of $2,000 to prequalified income-eligible applicants for a total of $4,000 in incentives.

    Driving adoption

To date, the program has approved more than 36,000 EV incentives and over 6,400 EV charger incentives.

    NJBPU President Christine
    Guhl-Sadovy
said Charge Up New Jersey remains one of NJBPU’s most popular initiatives and has helped drive EV adoption.

As of this March, there were more than 185,000 EVs registered in New Jersey: 2.6% of total registered vehicles and 11.6% of new vehicle sales in that month.

“This year, we are especially excited to expand upon the success of our program through the Charge Up+ incentive, which will make EVs even more accessible and affordable for residents across the state starting this fall,” said
    Guhl-Sadovy
    .

“For the fifth consecutive year, my administration is continuing its ongoing efforts to make clean transportation an affordable choice for New Jerseyans,” said Murphy. “By doing so, we will continue to ensure that every New Jerseyan regardless of income or zip code has ample opportunity to reap the full economic and environmental benefits of our clean energy transition.”
