Several new laws and regulations are going into effect here in the Garden State that may impact certain workers and employers.

The New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development provided a reminder and guidance on the recent and upcoming actions:

    • Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights , effective July 1 Signed into law earlier this year by Gov. Phil Murphy, establishes a broad range of rights and employment protections for domestic workers

    • Federal Increase in Salary Threshold for Exemptions for Overtime Pay , effective July 1 Incrementally increases the salary threshold required to exempt a bona fide executive, administrative or professional employee from federal overtime pay requirements; first increment raises threshold to $43,888

    • Increased Municipal Prevailing Wage Contract Threshold Amount , effective July 1 Rises from $16,263 to $19,375

    • Online Reporting of Certified Payroll Records , effective Aug. 15 All contractors and subcontractors performing public work must submit certified payroll records to the labor department via the New Jersey Wage Hub

“The Murphy administration and our state’s Legislature have worked hard to foster an economy that is fair to both workers and employers,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo in a press release. “Through their efforts, New Jersey has experienced historic growth in employment and businesses with more workers on record than ever.”

    Noncompete ban:

During a recent NJBIZ panel discussion, attorneys from three of New Jersey’s top law firms delved into the Federal Trade Commission’s controversial vote to prohibit the use of noncompete agreements for almost all U.S. workers. Click here to read what they had to say.
