NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — New Jersey commuters could face delays for the next few days as excessive heat continues to envelop the NYC area, NJ Transit said.

“We are currently experiencing heat-related rail equipment issues to the air-conditioning units and other electronic components due to extreme and excessive temperatures,” the agency posted on X Wednesday morning, “Customers may experience delays and it may be necessary to cancel or combine trips for the next 48-72 hrs.”

NJ Transit does not send out equipment for passenger service if an air conditioning issue is known, resulting in the possible delays.

“Our rail maintenance crews are working around the clock to make the necessary repairs and restore affected equipment to revenue service as quickly as possible,” NJ Transit said in a statement to 1010 WINS.

At least nine different lines were delayed during the Wednesday morning commute, adding to ongoing concerns about the transit authority’s reliability.

Just as a 15% fare hike went into effect last month, Gov. Phil Murphy met with Amtrak and NJ Transit to discuss ongoing issues in the transit system and how they will be addressed.

“We discovered an issue in the interface between Amtrak trains and between Amtrak’s infrastructure and New Jersey Transit’s trains that have caused these issues to reoccur,” Amtrak Chair Anthony Coscia said. “And we are moving Heaven and Earth to determine the precise cause of that and address it.”

The Garden State’s Congressional delegation has called for the federal Department of Transportation to step in and manage the disruptions.

Customers can receive NJ Transit updates via text message and email through the TRANSIT mobile app, by visiting Travel Alerts & Advisories for the latest service-related information or following NJ Transit’s line-specific accounts on X.
