Allegheny, Westmoreland county men shot at Trump rally identified, are in stable condition

State officials in Pennsylvania have identified the three additional shooting victims from Saturday's rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler County.

In a news conference Sunday, Gov. Josh Shapiro confirmed that 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, of Sarver, in Butler County, was killed by gunfire. Pennsylvania State Police later identified James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Allegheny County, and David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, in Westmoreland County, as having been wounded in the assassination attempt.

Copenhaver and Dutch were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to an Allegheny Health Network spokesperson. State police reported Sunday afternoon that both men are in stable condition.

The FBI said Thomas Matthew Crooks fired rounds at the former president from a rooftop approximately 150 yards away, nicking Trump's ear with one shot, before he was killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper sharpshooter perched on a different building.

“These victims and their families are certainly in our thoughts today,” Col. Christopher Paris, Pennsylvania State Police commissioner, said in a news release. “The Pennsylvania State Police continue to work tirelessly alongside our federal, state and local partners as this investigation continues.”

Copenhaver is listed as a member of the Moon Township Military Banner Committee . Established in 2019, the group pays tribute to the municipality's veterans.

A social media post from the Marine Corps League Department of Pennsylvania identified Dutch as a commandant with the nonprofit, which represents more than 5,000 Marines, corpsmen and chaplains.

"Please keep him and his family in your prayers," District Eight Vice Commandant Matt Popovich wrote. "I am sure there will be lots of angst and anger at this news but please be careful how you express it, verbally or physically will not help but prayers and compassion do."

Shapiro ordered all U.S. and commonwealth flags at state facilities, public buildings and grounds to be flown at half-staff in honor of Comperatore. Shapiro called Comperatora hero, noting Comperatore's wife said he'd shielded his family with his body.

“Corey was a girl dad," Shapiro said.

"Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community. Most especially, Corey loved his family," Shapiro said. "Corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night with him and the community."

A GoFundMe page created by a friend of the Comperatore family, which listed a goal of $7,000, had generated more than $430,000 in donations by 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
