On Friday, a judge in New Mexico dropped the charges against Alec Baldwin after discovering that the state had not provided key evidence that could have explained how live ammunition ended up on a movie set where a cinematographer was tragically killed.

The case against Alec Baldwin was dismissed with prejudice, indicating that the manslaughter charges against him are now permanently dropped. Baldwin could have potentially faced a prison sentence of up to 18 months if he had been found guilty. “There is no way for the court to right this wrong,” Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said.

The trial of Alec Baldwin ended dramatically, as he was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter charges following an incident on the “Rust” movie set where a gun he was rehearsing with discharged a live round. Baldwin was informed that the gun was “cold,” indicating that it should not have been able to fire. As we previously, Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer, tragically lost her life in the shooting incident that occurred in 2021.

The case dismissal occurred after a tense moment in the courtroom when a manila envelope containing undisclosed evidence was presented. Judge Marlowe Sommer then put on blue latex gloves, opened the envelope with scissors, and proceeded to inspect the ammunition inside while standing in the courtroom.

Mr. Baldwin’s legal team requested the dismissal of the case, alleging that the state had not disclosed the information that they had been provided with a set of rounds related to the case when the defense requested access to all ballistic evidence.

During the third day of the trial, Luke Nikas, a lawyer representing Mr. Baldwin, argued in court, “They buried it. They put it under a different case with a different number.”

The failure to share the new evidence was a big problem because the state must provide important evidence like this to the defense. The judge’s ruling removed a major worry from Mr. Baldwin, a well-known actor, who has been facing possible criminal charges for nearly three years. If he had been convicted, he could have gone to prison for up to 18 months.
