Records get broken all the time, that's the whole point of having them. But rarely do they get broken by people who don't realize they were there in the first place.

That was the case for Khristian Boyd, the Northern Iowa defensive tackle selected by the Saints in the 6th round. Working out at Northern Iowa's pro day, he was shooting for 35 reps on the 225-pound bench press. He got there and felt like he could do more. He ultimately got to 38, eclipsing the program's standing record by 1 rep.

"I had my friends, family there," Boyd said on WWL after his selection. "I had my teammates there and I had to show out in some way."

The moment was an incredible feat of strength, but also a moment that helped catch attention despite some bad luck throughout Boyd's pre-draft process. Having tweaked his hamstring a few days prior, bench press was the only drill he could do at the pro day. Boyd wasn't invited to the combine, but his 38 reps would've ranked second to Arkansas center Beaux Limmer. The next highest total was LSU's Jordan Jefferson with 34 reps.

Boyd was ultimately able to take part in Iowa's pro day to get his scores on record, and clearly the Saints took notice. Boyd has only been to New Orleans once in his life, and that was during his top 30 visit where he met with defensive coaches and dove into the playbook.

In the end, Boyd's record-setting performance is indicative of his mentality: Get the job done, however and wherever you can. That's as true as it can be on the interior of the offensive and defensive lines, where every rep is a battle, then you line up and do it again.

"Whether it’s practice, in a game, in walkthrough, I’ve got to bring it," Boyd said on WWL. "I’m playing against grown-ass men that are trying to feed their families and I understand that. I can’t wait to go in and compete.”

Boyd's first chance to compete with the Saints will come next week when he'll join his 7-member draft class and a host of UDFAs and tryout players during Saints rookie camp, which spans May 10-12.
