Seeing through the eyes of a New Orleans blind girl

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — At Audubon Charter School Uptown, New Orleans kids learn to let their fingers be their eyes.

For one day, they see the way a blind girl at the school, sees every day.

WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood is there.

The student is a seventh grader. Her name is Narjis. She’s twelve.

Because her optic nerve was damaged, she was born blind.

With big brother Amir typing and texting, Narjis reads messages in Braille.

The lesson other kids in school are learning is the anatomy of the eye. And what it likes to navigate life with a cane.

That’s life every day for Narjis who responds to all this with gratitude and grace.

And when she’s told thank you, she says she’s glad to do it.
