NATCHITOCHES, La. (KTVE/KARD) – The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame’s 2024 induction class celebrated one of football’s iconic figures, Drew Brees. Brees, known for his illustrious career as quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, joined the franchise in 2006 as an unrestricted free agent and played for 15 seasons. His tenure saw the Saints clinch seven NFC South division titles, including a remarkable four consecutive from 2017 to 2020, a stark contrast to their history of zero titles in the first 39 years. The pinnacle of Brees’s career in New Orleans came with their Super Bowl XLIV victory on February 7, 2010, where they triumphed over the Indianapolis Colts with a score of 31-17. Throughout his time with the Saints, Brees amassed impressive statistics, including over 68,000 passing yards, 491 touchdowns, and a completion rate of 68.8 percent.
“It was unbelievable,” said Brees. “You know, it’s funny how life works out because I had never had any exposure to New Orleans, didn’t know that much about it. Even when I was coming out of college at Purdue, going into the draft there was a tons of possibilities as to places that I would end up, and New Orleans wasn’t one of those, so it was never really a topic. I mean I could not imagine a better place to play football or a better fanbase to be able to play in front of. To your point, it is kinda like a college atomsphere of the fans are just so invested and they love the team so much, and it’s just so much to the fabric of the community. And you feel that very quickly. And I always felt like our connection between our team and the Who Dat nation is really the example for professional sports across the world, as to how a team can be integrated into a community in such a special way.”
The Super Bowl-winning MVP, who also made history by being inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame earlier this spring, boasts a remarkable resume. He’s a two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year, received the 2006 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year award, was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year, and honored as an Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
This week, with the exception of Wednesday, viewers can catch interview clips with Louisiana sports stars honored at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. These segments will be featured exclusively during our early shows, so tune in daily to discover each day’s highlighted athlete. Today, Drew Brees was the focal point of attention.
