NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — As Hurricane Beryl intensifies, the American Red Cross is reminding residents to stay prepared.

“You should have water. You should have nonperishable food items. You should have your papers together, you should have batteries, flashlights, things you would need to survive for a couple of days in case you lose electricity,” said Red Cross Regional CEO Kenneth St. Charles.

St. Charles says at the very least, your storm survival kit should be packed.

“You certainly should have your papers together: auto insurance, home insurance. Everyone should check your plans. You should check your personal situations and you should be insured up to a level where you can afford to and where you’re comfortable,” said St. Charles.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with your insurance policy, so you can best plan before and after the storm.

“The Red Cross has locations across the state, and we will provide sheltering and comfort zones,” said St. Charles.

It’s important to have conversations about where you plan to evacuate beforehand. The American Red Cross also urges pet owners to have a game plan for their four-legged friends, and to pack the necessary items for animals while traveling: food, water, medications, leashes and some form of identification.

“We are in constant coordination with the local official, so when it is time to leave when it is time to evacuate, follow their instruction but just know that organizations, our organization, the American Red Cross will be here,” St. Charles. said.
