NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The 30th annual Essence Festival of Culture has begun, and French Quarter businesses are eager for the foot traffic that comes with it.

“All of the professional people from all over the U.S. come, and I am happy. It brings business to the French Quarter, you know, it’s a quiet time for us,” said Jazzy Hats of New Orleans owner Eunice Hunt.

With large crowds making their way to the Big Easy, additional law enforcement and Troop NOLA will be in the area. After hearing of violent crimes occurring over the past couple of weeks, those who work in the French Quarter say the additional presence is necessary.

“Having more people on the blocks and watching surveillance would help tremendously,” said street performer Joseph Rohley.

“I am optimistic about security being here for us. Now and after Essence. You know, they have always been here. They walk through the quarters. They stop at the businesses. I feel safe here,” said Hunt.

Erin Hager says she has heard about the recent shootings. As a first-time festivalgoer, she says she plans to be aware of who is around her.

“I always make sure you now check your surroundings and make sure you know where you are. Look my peripheral vision is crazy, I see him right there,” said Hager.

There are also frequent travelers to the city who say they don’t expect to feel unsafe.

“I do often see the officers and sometimes they are not in full uniform they just have the badge of them. The crime has never been an issue here because I don’t do things to put me in danger,” said tourist Taleaha.

Troop NOLA’s representative Jacob Pucheu says he is encouraging everyone traveling to and visiting New Orleans to enjoy themselves, but to also remain vigilant.
