Hundreds attend former New Orleans councilwoman Jackie Clarkson’s visitation

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — More than 500 people entered the Freedom Pavilion at the National WWII Museum to honor the life of former city council member and state representative Jackie Clarkson , who died last month at the age of 88.

Clarkson may be best known for her work on the council before and after Hurricane Katrina.

“Every faction of this city and every aspect of this city was of equal importance of her,” said Jackie Clarkson’s daughter, Patricia Clarkson.

Admirers talked about Clarkson’s passion as she fought for the Algiers ferry, safety in the French Quarter, the expansion of New Orleans Recreation Development and much more.

“A lot of people don’t know all of the things that she did, whether it be in the business realm or whether it be just helping people get through processes involving city government. I’m just so pleased I had the opportunity to know her both as a realtor and as an elected official,” said New Orleans City Councilman Eugene Green.

She was also known for her support of the local military.

“She was our councilwoman for years and that’s where the headquarters is located and then when she was president of the city council again, went out of her way made sure that we felt appreciated, and again it wasn’t just the Marines, it was really all the services,” said U.S. Marine Corps Forces South Executive Director Gregg Habel.

All of this was accomplished while being a mother of five daughters, a grandmother of 10 and a great-grandmother of 16.

Her family says that the hole she leaves behind is something that is nearly impossible to fill.

“She leaves behind a stunning legacy and one that will not be, will never deflate. Will never be deflated. She leaves behind an incomparable life and I’m so lucky to be called her daughter,” said Patricia Clarkson.
