NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The New Orleans District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $28 million dollar contract to a Louisiana company for a drainage improvement project in an Algiers neighborhood.

On July 8, Louisiana’s Omega Foundation Services LLC from Slaughter was awarded a construction contract worth $28,927,540 for the General DeGaulle Drainage Improvement Phase 2 Improvement.

This project will mark the second federal drainage improvement feature on the Westbank. Additionally, the contract is the first to utilize funding from the 100% federally funded Disaster Relief Supplement Appropriations Act 2022.

“The USACE is committed to building upon the continued success to improve the internal drainage system to lower the risk of flooding to the residents and businesses in the Algiers area,” said Interim Senior Project Manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District Joshua Abadie.

USACE officials say the feature will advance the progress of the implementation of the Southeast Louisiana Urban Drainage Improvement Project in the Algiers Subbasin. The work will include:

    • The completion of the General De Gaulle section from Behrman Place to the Algiers Outfall Canal.
    • New subsurface drainage for:
      • Sandra Street and Pace Boulevard extending from the General De Gaulle Canal to Vespasian Street.
      • Indiana Street extending from the General De Gaulle Canal to Seine Street.

They add that the work is expected to provide the level of flood risk reduction from a 10-year rainfall event equivalent to three inches in the first hour and nine inches in a 24-hour period.
