Report: Teen accused of murdering tourist was wearing disabled ankle monitor

Days after reports unveiled that a suspect in the murder of a French Quarter tour guide was wearing a disabled ankle monitor, new reports have uncovered that a teen suspect accused of killing a tourist from Tacoma, Washington, was unsupervised by the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court.

According to our partners at WWL-TV , documents from the district attorney's office state that Malik Cornelius, 16, was wearing a GPS monitoring device when police say he shot and killed Jacob Carter in January. The D. A.'s records show that Cornelius was supposed to be supervised by a system known as Repath, but a letter from the Orleans Parish Juvenile Court said the contract with Repath's parent company was canceled at the end of 2023, about a month before Carter's murder.

Officials in the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office told the TV station they were never notified about the contract's cancellation.

The district attorney also say another teen who was supposed to be on an ankle monitoring system recently engaged in a three-week crime spree Uptown, committing more than 150 crimes.
