NOPD officers accused of leaking information to New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell

NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — A New Orleans law firm is investigating complaints against three current New Orleans police officers and retired Officer Jeffrey Vappie, who was on Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s security detail.
The investigation comes after the attorney for Anne Breaud, whom Cantrell failed to seek a temporary restraining order against , filed a complaint with the New Orleans Police Department’s Public Integrity Bureau (PIB), accusing the officers of leaking his client’s personal information.
“Ms. Breaud wants to know who put her information out there, who is responsible, who is in the chain, one or more parties, [who] put her information out there,” said Breaud’s attorney Justin Schmidt.
The petition for the temporary restraining order included Breaud’s social security number, an outdated OMV photo, and arrest information in which Schmidt says his client was the victim.
“That’s information that can only be accessed by law enforcement, yet that was contained in the mayor’s civil filings,” said Raphael Goyeneche, the president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
According to Schmidt, he learned Monday that the NOPD was already looking into one of its officers for their alleged involvement.
“I was pleasantly surprised when we got the email yesterday from the Transcendent Law Group that is investigating these claims because in that, it conveyed that there actually was another investigation that we were unaware of,” explained the attorney.
Schmidt says he’s cautiously optimistic about the results of the investigation.
“I suspect when we have enough information, there’ll be some additional litigation forthcoming,” said Schmidt.
WGNO reached out to the mayor’s office and the NOPD for comment. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office directed us to the NOPD. We were told the department doesn’t comment on open PIB investigations.
