NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans has announced that Turbine 4 is back online after months of being offline.

SWBNO officials said Turbine 4’s return puts the city in a better position during the peak of hurricane season, giving more power to older pumps when it rains. However, it “remains a fragile source.”

SWBNO leaders said they will continue to monitor its operations.

According to the SWBNO, Turbine 4 was built in 1915, making it more than 100 years old.

“We’ve said this many, many times. It’s very, very old, very fragile,” Sewerage and Water Board Executive Director Ghassan Korban told WGNO on Feb. 5 . “We fix one thing and turn the turbine on with fingers crossed that nothing else will go wrong. But inevitably, things do go wrong.”

On Wednesday, SWBNO officials said the turbine is back online and they are working to complete a “power complex” that will allow them to retire and replace older turbines with more efficient sources of power.
