NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans is expected to roll out credits for some customers after a billing review led to the realization that some customers were being overcharged.

“As soon as a customer brought this issue to our attention, we reached out to our software vendor who reviewed all 140,000 accounts and confirmed this was a system error that impacted a specific group of customers. We are looking into all our preexisting billing systems to ensure our smart meter rollout is as seamless as possible,” said SWBNO Executive Director Ghassan Korban.

Jeffrey Vappie, former NOPD officer and member of mayor’s security, is indicted

According to the SWBNO, the review led to the discovery that roughly 5,300 accounts were overcharged for wastewater services.

“For every 100 gallons of drinking water metered, we typically bill for 85 gallons of wastewater, assuming some water does not go down a drain for treatment. The technical error identified in the review prevented some customers from receiving that wastewater credit.”

The department announced that it will be issuing letters to those affected and will put a credit on the bills of those with active accounts. For those who have closed their accounts, a check will be issued within 30 days.

Customers with questions about the issue can call 52-WATER.
