NEW ORLEAN, Louisiana (KMID/KPEJ) – Military veterans from across the country will be competing in the 43rd annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games in New Orleans on Thursday. They will be competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals in such sporting events as wheelchair softball, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair basketball.

The annual event was last in New Orleans in 1990 at the Reilly Center in Tulane, now the games will be at the Convention Center with 23 different events.

Veterans have been training year-round for the Games, with Christina Bordelon, the local chair for the Games saying all the veterans are trained by coaches and their VA hospitals.

“They aren’t necessarily athletes, but they have been training, some have been training for years,” said Bordelon.
