The New Orleans City Council voted Thursday afternoon to give the Krewe of Alla a new night.
On the Wednesday before Mardi Gras, the Krewe of Alla will roll following the Krewe of Druids.
“We’re just processing,” said Gian Durand, the 93rd Queen of the Krewe of Alla. “This is just so awesome. I guess we’re just like, ‘Okay, it happened!'”
Krewe members believe the new time will boost membership and draw more crowds, ensuring another 90 years.
“I’m elated at the council’s decision today,” said Adam Strickland, the krewe’s captain. “I want to thank them again for taking some time out of their very busy schedules to fit our request in. We’re excited, and we’re ready to get to work.”
Work includes decorating Alla’s signature throw, a genie lamp.
“We start about two weeks after Mardi Gras,” said Del Hamilton, the krewe’s secretary. “We take a two-week break, and then we start all over again for the following year.”
Council members also passed new rules for parade goers: no generators, no tents and no latching ladders.
“All these were efforts to make Mardi Gras more inclusive, more accessible and for everybody to enjoy it because it’s a free public party,” said Council Vice President JP Morrell. “Once you start sectioning off parts of land to claim as your own, like [Christopher] Columbus, discovering South America, it really moves away from what Mardi Gras is supposed to be.”
Morrell adds that the council plans on setting aside money in the upcoming budget to have more trash trucks for picking up prohibited items, as well as more tow companies booting cars that are blocking traffic.
