IRVINE, Calif. ( WGNO ) — Saturday marked the last practice before players put on the pads, and Saints head coach Dennis Allen says he’s pleased with the competition on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

“We’ve taken the ball away a few times defensively. We’ve had a few explosive plays offensively,” said Allen. “I think there is a little back-and-forth between the two units. I think that’s what you are looking for in a good football team.”

One player that has caught the head coach’s eye is rookie wide receiver Mason Tipton, an undrafted free agent from Yale.

“This kid can run,” Allen said. “And, he’s smart–not just Yale smart. He’s football smart.”

Saints offensive linemen Erik McCoy says he likes what his is seeing in the new offensive playbook, especially the play-action passes.

“Play-action is my pride and joy”, said McCoy. “The more the better, just because it gives you an opportunity to be aggressive, even when you are passing the ball.”
