I became a believer in SheaMoisture’s Antiperspirant Deodorant when it helped me face the sweltering New Orleans heat. Word on the street is that natural deodorants aren’t built for the summer. I went against the grain for a while, stomping through these New York City streets with my Lume deodorant and a prayer. I put a lot of faith in my natural deodorant, so when I landed in New Orleans at 5:30 pm, and the temperature was still in the mid-90s, I knew it was time to start praying.

My requests obviously went unanswered. Natural deodorant is no match for the heat and humidity that encompassed Nola. I was prepared to spend the next few days with my arms hanging low to avoid offending the rest of the world. During the CampShea welcome dinner hosted by SheaMoisture, I received a goodie bag with their latest product, an antiperspirant deodorant that boasts 48 hours of protection. Recognizing my chance at redemption, I decided to give it a try.

    What causes smelly arm pits?

When sweat and bacteria mix, they can produce an unpleasant odor that disrupts your day. There are two types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine glands help cool the skin and regulate the body temperature. It does not produce a scent and covers most of the body. Apocrine glands are located in the groin area and armpits and are attached to hair follicles. When this gland mixes with bacteria, it’ll produce an odor that can be standard or offensive, depending on a few important factors.

Before brands began revamping their formulas, they made deodorants with aluminum. Aluminum kills beneficial bacteria while producing an overgrowth of other bacteria that cause odor. Now that brands are removing certain ingredients from their products, consumers can experience a more pleasant body odor. But if your pits are still offensive, you can start by examining your diet.

According to Cleveland Clinic , Spicy or sulfur-rich foods are often carried through your sweat. “Try removing overly smelly foods from your diet or pay attention to if specific foods make your body odor worse . Garlic, onions and alcohol are a few examples of foods that may make your sweat smell more unpleasant.”

Stress can also contribute to unpleasant armpits. Apocrine glands become active when you’re under pressure. Then there’s the obvious. Personal hygiene is vital to maintaining a fresh scent. Some suggest shaving your pits, as odor attaches itself to hair and breeds bacteria, but removing body hair is a personal choice everyone should make for themselves. Wearing tight shirts can aid odors, as well as putting on the same blouse without washing it.

SheaMoisture’s Antiperspirant Deodorant combats sweat and odor almost instantly

Stale-smelling armpits have been an insecurity of mine for some time now. Regular deodorant produced an unpleasant sour stench, while natural deodorant gave me an intense “I’ve been outdoors all day” smell. I’ve made my own deodorant (baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils for added scents), but I found it to be extremely harsh on my skin. I’ve used lemons under my arms, eliminating the smell but doing nothing for the sweat. And after a while, I’d smell like a hipster straight out of Williamsburg. I’ve sampled the top-rated deodorants that would work for a few months but would stop working as I adapted to them. As someone constantly on the go, finding a product that would combat odor so I could confidently move through life was vital.

I received the sweet-smelling Coconut & Hibiscus scent, which I initially thought would have too strong an aroma to combat my sweat. But once I applied it and went about my day, I noticed zero odor and minimal sweating. I used the deodorant for the duration of my trip thinking I’ve finally found something that helps combat the sweat and funk that comes with hot summer days.

I knew that in order to confidently say I found my new deodorant, I had to test it for more than a week in New Orleans. I continued to use it, but my upcoming trip to Thailand and Singapore would put SheaMoisture’s Antiperspirant to the test. I took a 22-hour flight to Bangkok, with a brief layover in Korea. Rushing through an airport to make it to a connecting flight should be an extreme sport because I was out of breath when I got to the gate, but my pits barely broke a sweat.

During my stay in Bangkok and Singapore, temperatures reached an average of 90 degrees. I worked up quite a sweat as I galavanted around town, taking in the culture. During frequent and discreet pit checks, I smelled nothing. The usual stench of all-day pits that ran through the wild was neutralized, helping me become less self-conscious and more present.

Impressed is an understatement. The last thing I wanted for myself was to continue to move through the world, self-conscious about my armpits. This antiperspirant deodorant helped restore my confidence. If you’ve been plagued with smelly summer pits, you’ll want to try this.
