New Orleans Saints quarterback Jake Haener has been diagnosed with skin cancer and will miss a practice next week, according to Nola.com .

The former Washington and Fresno State signal caller will undergo a procedure to remove the skin cancer. He has reportedly been practicing with a bandage on the side of his face.

Saints coach Dennis Allen recently told reporters that Haener will not be at Monday’s workout.

“I think there’s going to be a procedure that is going to take place Monday,” Dennis Allen said, per Nola.com. “My anticipation as we sit here today is that he’ll probably miss practice on Monday, we have an off day on Tuesday, and I expect him to be back full go on Wednesday.”

Jake Haener is entering his second season in the NFL and is competing with rookie QB Spencer Rattler for the backup quarterback job behind Derek Carr .

Haener expects the procedure on Monday to go smoothly.

“It’s just something I got to take care of and do the necessary steps and the people here, the people in the building, organization, has been great helping me deal with that,” Haener said last week, per Nola.com

Jake Haener was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Fresno State. He did not appear in a game last season.

As a senior at Fresno State, he threw for more than 2,600 yards, with 18 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Chase Young exceeding expectations in Saints training camp

On the other side of the ball for the Saints, defensive end Chase Young has had an excellent training camp thus far. Following a brilliant rookie season, Young’s NFL career has been mostly a string of misses because of a variety of injuries.

Young, the former Ohio State star, was the vaunted No. 2 player in the 2020 NFL Draft . He enjoyed a fabulous rookie season in Washington, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl.

But his 2021 season wasn’t nearly as successful, due in part to injuries. The impact of the injury lingered through 2022, making him expendable for Washington. Finally, the Commanders traded him to the 49ers on Nov. 1, 2023. San Francisco definitely was a better spot for Young. He even notched a sack against Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

Now he’s with the Saints. Young needed neck surgery in this off-season. But doctors cleared him for practice on July 22. And Saints coach Dennis Allen is already lauding Young this week as the team rolls into the heat of training camp.

“He’s certainly ahead of where we thought he was going to be at this point in time and so, I think the ramp up for him is just every day, you’re going to see a little bit more,” Allen told reporters. “Now, what’s a little bit more? Well, it may be a couple more reps each period until finally, we’re ready to fully incorporate him into the whole deal.”
