The Tampa Bay Fishin’ Report: Anglers having the most luck with redfish
Capt. George Hastick (727-525-1005): Capt. George reports the redfish action is very good, with good fishing in several parts of the Bay. He’s been working mangroves on the Pinellas side below the Gandy Bridge, but he’s been in contact with sources reporting reds schooling at Picnic Island, the Hillsborough side below the Gandy and at Apollo Beach. He’s also hearing anglers have been doing well on reds around the creeks above the Courtney Campbell Causeway. The reds often are hanging with schools of mullet, alternating from the shallow flats away from the mangrove early and late, moving into the shade of them when the sun is high. Cut bait, live sardines, pinfish and gold spoons have been working well. His anglers also have bagged a few snook, which have been venturing out 50 to 75 feet from the mangroves at times. Trout are on the grass and sand bottom in 7 feet of water and taking jigs with soft-plastic tails of live sardines. Most of them have been running 13-15 inches, but staying at it can produce a few to 20 inches. There are fair numbers of Tarpon in the Bay, and while fishing some rocks a silver king of about 70 pounds rolled behind the boat. Capt. George as spotted others rolling on the surface in the past week.
