Police officers did not shoot bear in Gatlinburg on Thursday, authorities say
GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Contrary to some posts on social media, the Gatlinburg Police Department said Friday none of its officers shot a bear. The police department said it learned Friday morning about a false social media claim that an officer shot and killed a bear on July 25. It said the "accusation of the Gatlinburg Police Department discharging a firearm and killing a bear is absolutely untrue."

ALCOA, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation said a crash on Alcoa Highway backed up southbound traffic for miles on Friday. The crash was reported at around 3:55 p.m. Eastern Time, according to TDOT. It closed a lane of the road, and TDOT said traffic was backed up for miles to near Montlake Drive — just past the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
