After closing out last week outscoring Worthington 27-4 in a two-game sweep followed by a 6-2 loss to Jordan, the St. Peter softball team hosted rival New Ulm in a Big South conference matchup Monday night. The offense that propelled the Saints Thursday night wasn’t on display Monday as they only managed four hits throughout the game, ultimately falling to the Eagles 10-0.

With the loss, St. Peter is now 8-7 (6-2 BSC) while conference leader New Ulm is now 11-1 (7-0 BSC).

Devyn Welp pitched the complete game for the Saints, allowing 10 hits and 10 runs, only four of them earned, while striking out six batters. The defense of St. Peter resulted in the majority of runs as six errors marred the game.

The Eagles immediately put the Saints on notice with five runs in the top of the first inning, but there was a sign of offensive life in the bottom of the inning as Cali Cross drew a leadoff walk before being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Cross reached third on a fielder’s choice to second but ended up stranded there with the inning ending on a strikeout.

The defense tightened up for St. Peter allowing single runs in the fourth and sixth before giving up three runs in the top of the seventh.

Cross finished the game 1-1 at the plate including a pair of drawn walks while Nora Whipps, Auden Anderson and Welp each recorded a hit.

St. Peter will look to get back into the win column Thursday, May 9, when the team hosts Tri-City United with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
