On Tuesday, Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) tweeted some thoughts on crime in New York before being promptly slapped with a community note pointing out his home state is much more dangerous.

Like many Republicans, the freshman senator has cast New York and other large American cities as bastions of crime and exemplars of Democratic policy failures. The spark for Tuberville’s latest broadside against cities curiously enough came from President Joe Biden’s visit to a New York ice cream shop on Monday, where he was asked about the war in Gaza. Biden said a temporary ceasefire in Israel’s military campaign is “close.”

    Tuberville tweeted :

Hope @JoeBiden enjoyed going out for ice cream in NYC while the rest of the city is afraid of crime and migrants.

The post has a fairly lopsided reply-to-retweet ratio of about five to one, not to mention the community note displayed prominently under the tweet:

New York City’s homicide rate is 4.8 per 100,000. Alabama, the home state of Sen. Tuberville, has a homicide rate three times higher (15.9 per 100,000)

The note cited WABC New York and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control as sources.

Tuberville also received a flurry of replies – many from New Yorkers – noting that the city is actually quite safe – especially compared to Alabama .

The senator has had a rough go of late. Last week, he praised an Alabama Supreme Court decision stating that embryos are people, which prompted several clinics that offer in vitro fertilization to pause the service. At the same time, he said, “We need to have more kids.”

When a reporter noted the court’s ruling would likely mean fewer kids, he replied, “That’s a hard one, it really is.”
