Sweet Cake , a dessert shop with a broad selection of bubble teas and colorful cakes, is rethinking the traditional coffee-and-dessert combination. To keep up with a growing interest in its confections and drinks, Sweet Cake is opening a second location in the East Village at 215 1st Ave.

In a phone interview with What Now NY , owner Feifan Chu explained Sweet Cake’s mission.

“Normally in New York bakeries combine coffee and desserts, and we wanted to do something different,” said Chu. “Sweet Cake pairs bubble teas and sodas with Taiwanese style desserts.”

According to reporting by EV Grieve , Sweet Cake’s original location in Flushing debuted in January of 2023.

Chu told What Now NY that approximately 80% of the clientele in the original Sweet Cake location are students. The new location on 1st Ave. is a short walk away from NYU’s campus– an intentional decision by Chu.

“We find young people like bubble tea and trying new cakes and new drinks,” said Chu. “Sweet Cake is designed to be a space for them to communicate with friends. With this new location so close to Saint Marks Place, we are focusing on bringing in students and tourists as customers.”

Guests who visit Sweet Cake on 1st Ave. will be able to try black sesame Earl Grey cake, cream puffs, cheesecakes, and mooncakes. According to Sweet Cake’s Instagram page, they will be unveiling some new desserts including Belgian waffles during the grand opening.

Chu anticipates Sweet Cake in the East Village will open around mid May.
