Cocoa prices have almost tripled since the start of the year. Traders have added to the problem of chocolate companies trying to protect profit margins by speculation, which has caused wild price fluctuations. However, the core problem has not gone away. Climate change has damaged the cocoa supply in Western Africa, which supplies over 60% of the world’s cocoa, causing massive crop destruction. Some of the plants may not recover for years.

Some US states and cities have suffered more than others based on price. The price of chocolate in New York City is 21% above the national average for cities. Hawaii has the most significant premium by the state at 13% above the national average.

    Northeast Is The Most Expensive

When specific chocolate candies are figured in, most cities with high premiums over the national figure are in the Northeast. The price of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate is 23% above the national average in Stamford, CT, just outside NYC. NYC ranks third in premium in this category. Its prices for Hershey’s Milk Chocolate are 23% higher than the national figure.

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Kisses also have the highest premium in Stamford, at 23%. The premium for M&Ms is highest in Yonkers, just north of NYC, at 24%. Stamford is a few tenths of a percent behind it.

Chocolate is much more expensive than ever worldwide, and the premium is even worse in some cities and states.
