Leandro’s journey from a conservative, Catholic upbringing in Brazil to becoming a figure in New York City’s LGBTQ+ scene is as remarkable as it is inspiring.

Raised in Brazil, Leandro’s early life was shaped by strict religious values. His first exposure to English came from the Spice Girls. After being outed at 19, he moved to the United States to play college volleyball, first in Missouri and later at Brigham Young University in Utah.

Leandro’s passion for photography blossomed as he began capturing the essence of New York’s LGBTQ+ community. His work vividly portrays the community’s diversity, from drag queens to parades and protests. His dedication to activism is evident through his involvement with the Reclaim Pride Coalition .

“I started documenting the protests as a consequence of the 2016 election,” Leandro recalls. “It felt energizing to be part of that movement for change.”

Leandro’s career, included coverage of PRIDE 50, where he met his teenage hero, Melanie C of the Spice Girls. This encounter was a dream come true for Leandro, who had admired her since learning his first English words from their songs.

The exhibition at Romer Hell’s Kitchen features images from large-scale community events and intimate portraits of young queer New Yorkers. These photographs, taken between 2020 and 2024, document the evolving identities and friendships within the LGBTQ+ community.

“NYC opened my eyes to what life could be,” Leandro explains. “I started to come into my own and embrace all the unique parts of me that I had hidden or repressed for years.”

“Into the Streets” is open throughout June, offering visitors a look into the contemporary LGBTQ+ movement through Leandro’s lens. His work captures history and inspires others to embrace their identities and advocate for change.
