Citi Bike Rider Killed on 11th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen

A Citi Bike rider was killed in Hell’s Kitchen on Friday afternoon after his pedal-assist e-bike was in collision with a truck. UPDATE: The cyclist who died was named by police as Gatlin Landess from W186th Street.

Emergency services received the first call at at around 2:30pm. Police said that a 32-year-old male cyclist had been hit by a box truck at the intersection at W50th Street and 11th Avenue. The truck was being driven by a 26-year-old male. EMS responded and pronounced the bicyclist deceased at the scene.

Police blocked W50st Street at 12th Avenue and started to divert traffic east and west from W51st Street while first responders dealt with the aftermath of the accident.

The Citi Bike could be seen on its side in the right hand traffic lane of 11th Avenue, and the cyclist’s body was covered with a purple EMS blanket. A truck with Lagunitas IPA branding remained at the scene while police awaited investigators.

Police say the truck driver remained at the scene, that there are no arrests at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Streetsblog reported that according to the Department of Transportation, the victim is the 11th cyclist to die on city streets so far this year. That number is down from 17 over the same period last year, but well up from the average of around five cyclist deaths by this point of the year in the Vision Zero era.
