Con Edison has issued a request for residents in Hell’s Kitchen and surrounding areas to conserve energy while crews work to repair equipment. The company has reduced voltage in the area by 8 percent to protect equipment and maintain service during the repairs.

The affected area includes 10th Avenue to the Hudson River, from W58th Street to W42nd Street, the utility said in a statement on Friday a little after 5pm. The area encompasses 11,300 customers in Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood.

Con Edison advises customers in these areas to avoid using energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers, and microwaves until repairs are completed. Additionally, they recommend limiting unnecessary use of air conditioning. If households have multiple air conditioners, the company suggests using only one and setting it to the highest comfortable temperature.

Con Ed spokesperson Allan Drury told us that the equipment being repaired is “due to some underground cables being out of service,” and is not connected with the 59th St Powerhouse or the sub-station on 11th Ave at W49/50th St.

In addition to Hell’s Kitchen, voltage reduction has been implemented in the Theater District, Midtown and Times Square neighborhoods.

Customers can report outages and check the status of service restoration at www.conEd.com/reportoutage , via the Con Edison mobile app for iOS and Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When reporting outages, customers should indicate whether their neighbors are also experiencing power loss. Those who report outages will receive updates with estimated restoration times as they become available.

For general outage updates, safety tips, and storm preparation information, customers can follow Con Edison on X .

In their statement, the company said that equipment issues in these neighborhoods are isolated and do not affect the rest of the Con Edison system. The company is in communication with New York City Emergency Management to coordinate efforts.

We will update this story as we get more information.
