Something special is in the works on the corner of West 4th and Jones. Over the last year and a half, business partners Ciarán Harrison and Christopher Buckle have spent countless hours renovating the space that once housed The Slaughtered Lamb Pub. They’ve moved staircases, opened up walls and extended a bar. Harrison and Buckle have transformed the space into a gastropub that will open in the next few weeks.

    Its name: The Parkgate .

What Now NY connected with Harrison over an email Q&A to learn more about the concept.

“When someone asks, ‘Where’s good to go?’ We want the answer to be, ‘The Parkgate’,” said Harrison. “When people walk through our doors, we want them to feel seen, appreciated, and welcome.”

According to Harrison, The Parkgate is all about serving high quality drinks, playing music and creating delectable dishes. Chef Trevor A. Safrani will be the mastermind behind the kitchen. With over 15 years’ experience refining his culinary skills in several renowned New York restaurants, Safrani is poised to bring a memorable menu to The Parkgate.

Business partners Harrison and Buckle also have extensive experience working in bars. Both worked in bars on the same block in the West Village for several years, during which time they began tossing around the idea of opening their own concept.

“Having worked in the neighborhood for numerous years, we have both built up strong friendships with a lot of the neighbors and we know that this is the perfect space to start our business,” said Harrison. “The West Village is home to some of the best restaurants and bars in New York City and we believe that West 4th street is a hub for a lot of these. We want to become a staple in this neighborhood.”

Harrison grew up working in his family’s bar called “Gibneys Malahide”. Nine years ago he began working in New York City’s restaurant scene. Buckle is originally from Liverpool in the UK and has been working at New York restaurants and bars for 20 years. The opening of The Parkgate will solidify their hospitality legacy in the United States.

“I’m really excited to have the chance to combine our experience in the New York bar and restaurant scene with all I’ve learned from working in a long-standing, family run business like Gibney’s as part of this concept,” said “The bar is named after the Gibney’s first pub in Dublin on Parkgate St in a nod to that.”

The Parkgate will be able to fit just around 200 guests across two levels. The lower level is a basement bar which will be ideal for private parties. Harrison and Buckle plan to host DJ’s to bring the space to life.

“When we took this space, the previous bar which had been here for many years had been neglected so we did a complete gut renovation,” said Harrison. “We knew we had an opportunity to renovate such a unique space, but that design would be critical to achieving the welcoming atmosphere we are after, so there has been a lot of thoughtfulness around achieving an elevated design while making sure the space is warm and comfortable.”

The Parkgate aims to open by the end of June after a year and a half’s worth of work being invested into the project.

“We’ve been so fortunate to work with some amazing creative partners in terms of both the space and our branding and even some of our artwork,” said Harrison. “It’s been pretty amazing to see the results of so many brilliant minds, and I can’t wait for other people to experience it too.”
