Vice President of Public Health Advocacy, Northwell Health

Sandra Lindsay is Northwell Health’s vice president of public health advocacy. She leads the health system in expanding knowledge of issues that affect community health and public policy, dispelling misinformation and supporting medical research and global equity. With nearly 30 years of nursing experience, Lindsay previously served as director of patient care services in critical care at Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

In December 2020, Lindsay became a household name as the first person in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine outside of a clinical trial. For her bravery, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Bidenthe highest civilian honor.

Lindsay is a published researcher and author, including pieces in Time Magazine, American Nurse Journal, Nursing Management and others. She continues to speak at various notable forums and events across the globe on public health issues. Her memoir, “First in Line: How COVID-19 Placed Me on the Frontlines of a Health Care Crisis,” will be released next month.

Lindsay moved with her siblings to the United States from Jamaica, West Indies, in 1986 to pursue her dream of becoming a registered nurse. Her educational accomplishments include earning an associate’s degree in nursing from Borough of Manhattan Community College; a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Joseph’s University, New York; a Master of Science in nursing from Herbert Lehman College; and a Master of Business Administration and honorary doctorate from Hofstra University.
