Devonté Hynes — A.K.A. Blood Orange — will be making his Broadway debut later this year as a member of the creative team for Job , a new play being mounted at the Hayes Theater in New York.

Hynes will compose new music for the play, which was written by Max Wolf Friedlich and originally premiered Off-Broadway last year at SoHo Repertory. Original cast members Peter Friedman and Syndey Lemmon are confirmed to star in the Broadway production. Job begins with preview performances on July 15th and opens formally on July 30th, with a tentative close date on September 29th.

The show’s logline reads, “Jane (Lemmon), an employee at a big tech company (you know the one), has been placed on leave after becoming the subject of a viral video. She arrives in the office of a crisis therapist – Loyd (Friedman) – determined to be reinstated to the job that gives her life meaning. Job zooms in on two careerists of different generations, genders, and political paradigms to examine what it means to be a citizen of the internet and our obligation to help the people who need it most.”

Producer Hannah Getts said in a statement, “Anyone familiar with Dev’s work already knows what a naturally brilliant storyteller he is, so it’s no surprise that his work on Job not only enriches the thematic and narrative threads but also deepens the emotional resonance of the play. We are thrilled to integrate his innovative musical vision into the fabric of Job .”

Dev Hynes’ last album as Blood Orange was Negro Swan , which arrived in 2018. Since then, however, Hynes has remained busy — he released his Four Songs EP in 2022 and lent his hand to several film and television scores, including Queen & Slim , We Are Who We Are , In Treatment , Passing , and most recently, Paul Schrader’s Master Gardner .
