First Alert Weather: Potentially severe storms likely across Tri-State Area on Sunday 03:28
Alerts and advisories
CBS New York
A Red Alert is in place on Sunday due to the threat of severe thunderstorms.
CBS New York
A Heat Advisory is in place for Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, & Ocean Counties on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There is a high risk of rip currents at all south facing beaches in New York throughout the weekend.
Saturday night forecast
A Yellow Alert has been added to tonight's forecast as a potent line of thunderstorms, which has already produced a few tornado warnings in Pennsylvania, is moving towards the area.
As that line arrives here, isolated severe storms are possible, with the greatest hazards being heavy rain and gusty winds
A few more renegade storms may transverse the region throughout the overnight hours after that initial line moves through.
Lows will not get out of the 70s for most locations, with very muggy conditions in place.
Sunday storms
CBS New York
A few more isolated storms are possible on Sunday morning before some sunshine breaks out.
CBS New York
This will lead to temperatures soaring back into the upper 80s and low 90s, and with that high humidity in place, heat indices will range from the upper 90s to low 100s, especially in central and southern portions of New Jersey.
CBS New York
The breaks of sun along with all that heat and humidity will prime the atmosphere for the development of strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening hours. These storms may contain damaging winds, hail, torrential downpours and even an isolated tornado or two.
CBS New York
With a tropical airmass in place, the storms will be capable of producing copious amounts of rain, which may total between 2-3 inches in some locations. This may lead to flash flooding.
CBS New York
Clearing skies and lowering humidity will follow in the wake of the storms later on Sunday night.
