Rangers extend qualifying offers to 2 key defensemen

The New York Rangers extended qualifying offers to several skaters before the 5 p.m. ET deadline on Sunday, including key defensemen Ryan Lindgren and Braden Schneider.
It was simply a formality for the Rangers since failing to do so would have allowed each defenseman to become a free agent. Lindgren’s qualifying offer is $3.6 million, and Schneider’s is $874,125. The qualifying offer is extended to restricted free agents, allowing teams to retain the rights to the player as well as match offer sheets from any other team.
Lindgren is in his final season as a restricted free agent and has arbitration rights, which adds extra urgency to contract talks with the Rangers. The 26-year-old can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season and is likely looking for a longer-term contract with a significant raise, especially since he’s been Adam Fox’s longtime defense partner. Lindgren made $3 million last season.
Schneider most likely will sign a bridge contract with the Rangers in the range of $2 million or so annually. The 22-year-old is a key component of the blue line with a bright future. He is expected to move up to a second-pair role next season alongside K’Andre Miller.

The Rangers also extended qualifying offers to prospects Matthew Robertson and Karl Henriksson.
Robertson was a second-round pick (No. 49 overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft. The 23-year-old has developed slowly, though he was third among Hartford Wolf Pack defensemen with 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) last season. Robertson has played three seasons with the Wolf Pack and has yet to make his NHL debut.
The Rangers qualified Robertson with an offer of $840,000.
Henriksson, who recently signed in Europe, was given a $874,125 qualifying offer, meaning the Rangers retain his rights even though he won’t play in the organization next season. The 23-year-old center was also selected in the second-round of the 2019 draft (No. 57 overall). He played two seasons with the Wolf Pack, scoring 11 goals and finishing with 23 points in 64 games this past season.
Two players did not receive qualifying offers from the Rangers. One is goalie Olaf Lindbom, a second-round pick in 2018 (No. 39 overall), signed to play in Europe next season after largely playing in the ECHL the previous two. The other is forward Bobby Trivigno, who had 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 49 games with the Wolf Pack in 2023-24.
