Clase Azul is known for releasing expensive luxury tequilas that come in ornate handmade ceramic decanters that people often display as artwork in their homes. These bottles often sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but interested buyers can find them fairly easily at specialty liquor retailers. That’s not the case with the brand’s latest release, however, a new anejo tequila that is available to purchase only in New York City and only by special invitation.

Clase Azul Tequila The Loft Brooklyn Collection I is named after the brand’s events space in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn that is used to host parties and tastings. The point of this release, according to the brand, is to celebrate New York City and its ties to Mexico. “New York City holds a unique place in our hearts,” said Clase Azul creative vice president, Héctor Gaytan, in a statement. “As one of our most important markets, it has allowed us to share the magic of Mexican culture with many people. As a heartfelt gesture of our appreciation, we’ve crafted a piece that intertwines the city’s iconic imagery with Mexico’s cultural heritage.”

The liquid inside the bottle is an añejo tequila (aged between one and three years) that was given a special secondary maturation by master distiller Viridiana Tinoco. First the tequila was aged for a minimum of 20 months in American whiskey barrels, and then it was finished for a period of time in Calvados casks, a type of apple brandy from France. As you’d expect from Clase Azul , the decanter is a unique work of art. The inspiration for the design comes from NYC’s Chrysler Building, so the ceramic bottle is painted with verdigris brushstrokes to evoke the building’s silhouette, while the hammered copper cap represents “the transformation of New York City’s architectural landscape over time.”

As mentioned before, Clase Azul Tequila The Loft Brooklyn Collection I is available to purchase only with a special invitation from the brand in New York City reserved for the brand’s private client program. The price tag is just as exclusive at $1,250 per one-liter bottle and there are only 1,000 available, but it looks like they are already showing up on the secondary market for five times that amount. If your invite got lost in the mail, you can also find other Clase Azul expressions, including the mezcal and the uber high-end Ultra expression, available to purchase from ReserveBar now.
