Two teenagers died while swimming at New York’s Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn, according to police.

Police received an emergency call for a water rescue in the area of Stillwell Avenue and Boardwalk West at 8:10 p.m. Friday, the New York Police Department said in a statement.

Arriving officers were informed two females, aged 17 and 18, had gone into the water and disappeared from view, police said.

Police from the department’s aviation, harbor, scuba units conducted a search. Divers eventually removed both the young women from the water, police said.

The swimmers were transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Coney Island where they were pronounced dead, according to police, who said the investigation continues.

Witnesses told WABC-TV that a rain storm began and most people at the beach took shelter, but the two young women went into the rough ocean water.

It comes after a woman suffered injuries when she was bitten by a shark believed to be around six feet long on South Padre Island in Texas on July 4. In scary footage, the shark’s dorsal fin can be seen poking up from the water as the injured woman lay on the beach.

Texas Parks and Wildlife said in a statement that two people had been bitten on the beach. Many on the beach were there to celebrate July 4.

“Details at this time indicate that two people were bitten and two people encountered the shark but were not seriously injured,” officials said. “The two victims who were bitten were transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville where one is being treated and the other has been flown out for further treatment.”

The statement continued: “Local game wardens and members of the Texas Game Warden Marine Tactical Operations Group assisted in patrolling the beach by boat and land patrol while DPS patrolled the area by helicopter and SPI PD and Cameron County rangers assisted with crowd control on the beach. No further details are known at this time.”

Shark attacks in Texas waters are not a common occurrence, the experts added. It is usually a case of when a shark mistakes a human for its more regular prey. The last reported shark attack in the area was five years ago, Game Warden Captain Chris Dowdy said.

Beach patrol, firefighters and police were patrolling the shore and flying drones following the attacks, according to the South Padre Island city secretary Nikki Soto.
