Swimmers were back in the water at Coney Island as early as 8 a.m. Sunday before lifeguards were on duty – just days after two sisters drowned and a day after teen boys were rescued from the water. The boys, ages 14 and 16, were rescued from the water after the FDNY responded to a 911 call. Both incidents happened after 6 p.m. when lifeguards are off duty. “People just want to be a little reckless,” said one beachgoer. “They want to have fun and enjoy it and I understand that. But again, we need to have precautions and we need to just care about the children.” Residents are reminded to only swim when lifeguards are on duty, don’t leave children unattended near the water and swim parallel to the shore if stuck in a rip current.
