As New Yorkers head to the beach to beat the heat, swim safety needs to be on the top of everyone’s mind. New York City's Parks Department and other safety officials are releasing safety tips for swimmers. While at the beach, only swim when lifeguards are on duty between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., never swim alone, be aware of rip currents. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore. Lifeguard shortages are still affecting New York City. A Parks Department spokesperson says they only have 790 of the 1,000 guards needed to fully staff city beaches and pools. The Parks Department are adding more guards every day so staffing numbers will continue to increase. The safety reminders come as two Bronx sisters drowned at Coney Island beach on Friday. "
