4 Items That Are Cheaper at Wegmans Than Trader Joe’s

A recent Business Insider article profiled a New York City shopper who chronicled her journey through two of Manhattan’s most celebrated food stores — Trader Joe’s and Wegmans.
A self-professed “die-hard Trader Joe’s fan,” she admitted to being amazed by the sheer size of Wegmans, its eye-popping number of choices, its money-saving prices for customers and its stunning volume of inventory compared to the much smaller and more specialized store of which she was a dedicated superfan.
Wegmans had much more to offer, its selections were fresh and inviting, and the store and its employees offered a more full-service experience — but compared to Trader Joe’s, Wegmans was expensive.
Her experience was not an outlier. Many of Wegmans’ products cost more and some Redditors compare the price and quality to that of famously expensive Whole Foods — but not always.
Wegmans fans rave about the quality, selection and meat aisle prices. Ground beef — one of the most common meat products — is a prime example.
The Better Beef Company calls 80/20 ground beef — 80% lean and 20% fat — “the iconic ratio for making burgers. It has enough fat to keep the flavor high and keep the meat moist.”
At Trader Joe’s, a one-pound package of 80/20 ground beef costs $6.49 . At Wegmans, the same one-package of 80/20 ground beef costs just $5.39 . July 4th has passed, but keep Wegmans in mind when it comes time to fire up the grill on Labor Day.
Chicken Breasts
If chicken is more your speed than beef, Wegmans has you covered with 99% trim boneless, skinless breasts fresh from its partner network of Pennsylvania family farms for $5.99 per pound .
At Trader Joe’s, organic, free-range, boneless, skinless chicken breasts will run you a buck more — $6.99 per pound .
Smoothie lovers have a few options when they blend their favorite mix of healthy goodness. They can use fresh fruit and then water it down by adding ice, or they can use frozen fruit as the ice to keep things creamy.
The Trader Joe’s Fruits & Greens Smoothie Blend costs $3.99 for a one-pound bag. At Wegmans, you can get the store’s brand of frozen fruit for much less. For example, a one-pound bag of frozen blueberries — which play a starring role in the Trader Joe’s blend — costs just $2.49 . The same price applies to many offerings in Wegmans’ much larger selection of frozen fruits.
Salad Dressing
Like frozen fruit, Wegmans offers a far wider range of salad dressing options than Trader Joe’s — and often at a much lower price.
For example, Trader Joe’s organic mango vinaigrette dressing — famous as a simple but flavorful addition to crisp summer salads — costs $3.99 for a 12-ounce bottle.
If the light, fruity Trader Joe’s dressing had an opposite, it would probably be the equally delicious but radically different Wegmans garlic Caesar dressing, a creamy and tangy selection that costs just $1.99 for the same 12 ounces.
