MTA Chair Janno Lieber says the subway system is getting safer.

He reports that crime underground fell by 7 percent during the first six months of the year compared to 2023. When compared to pre-COVID levels, crime has fallen by 11 percent.

"These are major, major steps forward. We said we were going to focus on subway crime and take a look New York, it is showing," Lieber said.

He credited the work they've done in going after fare evasion. Lieber says the crime numbers could be pushed even lower if DAs in New York City address the recidivism problem.
