Former NEO Alum Samkelo Cele Invited to NBA Summer League by New York Knicks

MIAMI, OK — Former NEO Golden Norsemen Samkelo Cele has received an inivitation to the NBA Summer League down in Las Vegas to compete with the New York Knicks.

He received the call from the Knicks in late June.

Cele did very well in his time in Miami helping lead NEO to a 52-14 record and a berth to the NJCAA National Tournament in 2019.

In his sophomore season with NEO, he averaged 15.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51% from the field and 41% from three-point range.

Cele told ESPN , “I had just got back from a workout. I got the call saying that I had been invited to the Summer League by the Knicks. It was surreal”.

“I couldn’t believe it, even though it was something I had wanted and hoped for because opportunities have been spoken about since last year’s BAL”.

Cele spent 2023 playing in the Basketball Africa League where he earned First Team Selection honors.

At the Summer League, Cele will be one of two South African players.

The Knicks begin Summer League play on July 13th when they take on the Charlotte Hornets.
