A woman escaped a would-be rapist on the Upper East Side, who then made his getaway on a motorized scooter, police said.
The victim, 27, was in front of 349 East 76th St. around 11:45 p.m. Friday when she was accosted, authorities said.
Cops responding to a 911 call of an “assault in progress” found the distraught victim, who was then taken to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition, police said.
“We have an influx of people from all over the world that’s contributing to the crime. I think the mayor has to do a better job of policing the streets,” said a man who gave his name as Chris as he worked out at a nearby New York Sports Club. “You can’t underestimate the safety of New Yorkers nowadays.
The neighborhood is “typically safe,” a front desk employee at the gym told The Post.
“For something like that to happen, it’s pretty surprising,” the gym worker said. “It’s scary, you know. You just got to be careful.”
The disturbing episode, which the NYPD said occurred in front of 349 East 76th St., around 11:45 p.m. Friday, took place as rape across the city has spiked 11%, according to the latest department data.
