NEW YORK (PIX11) — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and State Department of Health have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for New York City and surrounding areas.

Officials warn of high levels of ground-level ozone, caused by sunlight chemically reacting with automobile exhaust and industrial emissions.

While ozone is a colorless gas, it will produce hazy skies and could reduce visibility in high concentrations, officials say.

To reduce exposure, people should consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity and staying indoors. Anyone who experiences symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing should consider consulting their personal physician.

Ozone levels generally decrease during at night.

The advisory includes the New York City metro area, Rockland and Westchester counties, and the Lower Hudson Valley, which includes Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, and Ulster counties.
