NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The third heat wave of the summer entered its third day on Tuesday, which was shaping up to be the hottest day so far this year in Central Park.

The high in the park is expected to hit 97 degrees on Tuesday, which would make it hotter than last Monday, when the high hit 95, according to AccuWeather.

Tuesday's weather is mostly sunny, hot, and humid, with a chance of gusty thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, particularly in areas north and west of New York City. The combination of high temperatures and humidity levels may create dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service extended a Heat Advisory through at least Wednesday night for most of the area, including all five boroughs of NYC. A swath of Central Jersey is under a more severe Excessive Heat Warning until at least Wednesday night.

Gov. Kathy Hochul warned New Yorkers to take precautions as the severe heat bears down across much of the state this week. "I encourage New Yorkers to stay hydrated, take advantage of free pool access at our beautiful State Parks, and plan ahead to cool off during this time," the governor said.

Speaking at the Emergency Response Center in Brooklyn on Monday, Mayor Eric Adams said the city has more than 500 cooling centers, including at libraries. Con Edison officials said they're ready to respond to issues with the grid, while the MTA will have "heat patrols" checking tracks, which can be affected by the heat. The NYPD, FDNY and Parks Department are also coordinating to monitor beaches after several drownings in recent weeks.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy also advised resident to stay in doors on Tuesday as temperature's will rise to over 95 degrees.

Later Tuesday night, the forecast predicts partly cloudy skies with warm and steamy conditions, and a low of 79 degrees. A heavy thunderstorm is anticipated Wednesday afternoon or evening, potentially bringing flooding downpours, hail, and damaging winds. Wednesday's high will reach 94 degrees, with RealFeels near 100 degrees.

Thursday will see a shift in the weather pattern, with a shower or thunderstorm possible in the morning. However, it will not be as hot, as clouds break for sunshine and humidity levels decrease throughout the day. The high will be 84 degrees.

By Friday, conditions will improve further, with partly sunny skies and lower humidity, and a high of 83 degrees.
