TRIBECA, Manhattan (PIX11) — It is hot in New York City, and if you’re looking for an activity on the waters of the Hudson River, look no further than free kayaking.

At the Pier 26 Boathouse in Manhattan, you can rent a kayak and enjoy paddling up and down the Hudson, keeping within the bay. Kayaking is first come, first served, and it is recommended that you show up early to get a spot.

    Before you hit the waters

There are a few things you will need to do before you are able to go kayaking. First, you will need to sign a waiver even if it is not your first time. It is also important that you know how to swim, and you will be required to wear the lifejacket that is provided to you. You will also need to be 18 years or older or have a parent or legal guardian with you.

    While kayaking

Once you are on the water, you will have 20 minutes. The kayaking area is restricted to the bay, the ends of which are marked by the piers. Swimming is not allowed in the river, and you must return if you are called back.

    • Between May 18 and Oct. 14, kayaking is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays.
    • Between June 18 and Aug 29, kayaking is available Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
